Fresh From Apple Records: Badfinger aka The Iveys

Here's another round of examining the "Fresh From Apple Records" boxed set from 2010.  I remember when it came out, I figured I would wait to buy it till used copies were cheaper, which I predicted would be right around the time "Fresh From Apple Records, Volume 2" was released.  Well, it's been seven years and there's no sign of a second box ever happening.  So let's look at what is NOT in the 2010 box.  I'll be doing this in a series of posts, focusing on different facets of Apple-dom.
For reference, "Beatles Blogger" has a nice post about unboxing the "Fresh" boxed set.  He also has an excellent post on the (slightly different) 1990s Apple reissues, which came out on cassette, CD and vinyl (the 2010 reissues were CD and digital download-only).  And finally, this is a listing of all the tracks on the 2010 box.  I'm using the box as my reference point (instead of the individual reissued CDs) because the box includes two whole disks of bonus cuts, which are otherwise available only as digital downloads.

Arguably the most successful non-Beatles act on Apple, Badfinger understandably takes up the lion's share of the 2010 Apple boxed set.  Only a half-dozen tracks from their tenure seem to be missing.

The band's first album ("Maybe Tomorrow") and singles were released as The Iveys.  The 1968 debut LP is highly sought after -- whether original vinyl, the 1991 CD or even bootlegs of these releases -- as it was never officially released in the US or UK; just in Europe and other parts of the world.  Much of the LP was eventually reissued the following year as part of "Magic Christian Music," the first album by the newly rechristened Badfinger.  Most of the rest of the Iveys album is on the box.  One track -- "Fisherman" -- was remixed for "Magic Christian Music"; the original Iveys mix is not on the 2010 box.

Also not on the box is "Looking For My Baby," a cut that's only available as a bonus track on the 1991 CD.

One last song -- "And Her Daddy's a Millionaire" -- was the b-side of an Iveys single, and also was added to the 1991 CD.  The 2010 box only lists an "alternate version" of this song.  No idea if this is a remix, re-recording, alternate take, etc.

Badfinger's third album, "No Dice," also had one bonus track -- "Get Down" -- added to the 1991 CD, but is listed on the 2010 box only as an "alternate version."  Again, no idea if this is a remix, re-recording, alternate take, etc.  An additional 1991 bonus track, "Friends Are Hard to Find," is missing from the 2010 issues entirely.

And lastly, Badfinger's Apple swan song, "Ass," had one bonus track added in 1991: "Do You Mind."  Once again, an "alternative version" of this tune is listed on the 2010 box, but there's no way to tell if it's the same recording.

The newer reissues do finally release all the songs from the original version of "Straight Up" (before George Harrison and Todd Rundgren got involved), and also offer the best stuff that was compiled on the most notable Badfinger bootleg I know of, "Unreleased and Some Released."
