Columbia House and the History of Pre-Recorded Reel Tapes

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE REEL TAPE DATABASE
Reel to reel recording was invented during World War II, and brought to the U.S. by the Allies after the war.  While it took off in professional applications, there wouldn't be pre-recorded tapes available on a large scale until 1954.  That year, RCA began releasing half-track stereo tapes in small batches, duplicated in real-time (or near-real-time).  Stereo LPs were still a few years away, so this was the only way to hear stereo at home aside from cumbersome radio broadcasts in which one channel was fed on AM, the other on FM.
These early tapes are still prized today for their sound quality, and the packaging offered the same sleeve notes, graphics and booklets as their vinyl counterparts.  Reels did not suffer from skips, surface noise or inner-groove distortion and had slightly better bass response than vinyl due to being released at 7.5 IPS -- the slowest "professional" speed.  However, these early tapes had one drawback: breakage.  If improperly stored, the acetate-based tapes can grow brittle and end up in pieces.  By the mid-1960s, most manufacturers switched to Mylar-based tape (which tends not to grow brittle, but will stretch, if pulled).
By the late 1950s, the advent of stereo LPs combined with escalating tape costs pushed reel manufacturers to switch from half-track to quarter-track, doubling the amount of material that would fit on a given length of tape.
Throughout the 1960s -- as the classical and audiophile markets held steady and the popular market exploded -- more and more albums were released on tape.  Since classical works were longer and considered more prestigious, they remained at 7.5 IPS, while pop releases increasingly came out at the lower speed (with lower fidelity) of 3.75 IPS – again doubling the playing time of a piece of tape.
By 1969, Columbia Records -- which had drastically increased its pop and rock roster after the Monterey Pop Festival -- was putting out reels at both speeds, denoted by an HC (3.75) or CQ (7.5) prefix, usually with full color front-and-back graphics.  That same year, Capitol decided to subcontract its reel business to Ampex, which immediately set about reissuing the label's biggest hits (i.e. The Beatles) at high-speed, supplanting Capitol's previous two-LPs-at-low-speed reels.  These tapes were sought after for many years as a high quality way to obtain the band's early material in true stereo.

BEGINNING OF THE END
By 1972, cassettes and 8-tracks had usurped the reel with their portability, and the format disappeared from stores.  Capitol was out of the reel game as its contract with Ampex expired.  The latter company sold most of its reel duplicating equipment to Magtec, which was formerly Bell & Howell's reel tape division.  In 1973, Magtec changed its name to "Stereotape" and started manufacturing reels for MCA, RCA, Polydor, and the WEA (Warner Bros./Elektra/Atlantic) family of labels.  London continued with Ampex and then switched to Stereotape around 1976.  Columbia itself ceased its own releases... for a year.
In 1973, the Columbia House Record Club began releasing Columbia’s reels (as well as those from associated labels such as Epic and Masterworks).  Although the club was affiliated with Columbia Records -- and the majority of releases were from top-selling Columbia artists – most of the other major labels eventually contracted with Columbia House.  In 1973, A&M started leasing a few of their best sellers for reel release. Capitol/EMI/Angel followed in the summer of 1975, and then London shortly thereafter.  MCA released very few reels through Columbia House. RCA seems to have not released any, possibly because its focus was mostly on country by this point, which didn’t have much overlap with well-healed audiophiles.
Columbia House used a sequential numbering system starting at 6000 for all labels, with a prefix of 1R1, or 1R2 -- or slight variants -- for double albums.  (At some point around 1979, Capitol/EMI/Angel was given a separate sequence of 1R1-5xxxxxx).  The releases had color reproductions of the album jackets on the front of the box, but usually just a black-and-white song listing on the back.  Some issues didn't even carry songwriting credits, lyrics, musician credits or reproductions of back covers, posters, stickers or inserts.  The tapes had mediocre sound quality due to a combination of thin tape, high-speed duplication and low playback speed.  However, classical releases from Columbia Masterworks (and occasionally other Classical labels) did at least come out at 7.5 IPS, with liner notes.
By contrast, WEA was still releasing 7.5 IPS tapes through Stereotape, which not only duplicated front and back covers, but tried to squeeze credits onto the reel label.  Best of all for audiophiles, many tapes were encoded with Dolby.  On the classical side, Barclay-Crocker -- a small, audiophile classical reissue company -- also offered Dolby.  By the early 1980s, B-C offered an option for dbx noise reduction.
In 1978, Stereotape was bought up by a group of reel enthusiasts, becoming a mail-order only "club," The Reel Society, which lasted until 1981.  The Reel Society mostly reissued Stereotape classical titles from the mid-1970s.

COLUMBIA HOUSE RULES
This change meant that WEA had to move its reel product to Columbia House.  So while 1977's "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac came out on a glorious Dolby 7.5 IPS Stereotape reel in deluxe box, the 1979 double-LP followup ("Tusk") was crammed onto a single low-speed Columbia House reel with no graphics aside from the front cover.
The story of prerecorded reels came to an end in the mid-1980s.  Cassettes had supplanted 8-tracks, reels and even vinyl, and audiophiles were starting to embrace CDs.  Reel tape simply lost what little advantage it had in the marketplace, and Columbia House abandoned the format in late 1984.  The last two reels are generally acknowledged to be Placido Domingo’s “Greatest Love Scenes” (at high speed) and a low-speed pop compilation, “Gold & Platinum,” released, for some reason, on the “Realm Records" house brand.  Barclay-Crocker finally threw in the towel in early 1986.
It would be 30 years before another reel label (The Tape Project) debuted, but they seem to be dormant as of mid-2018.

PINK FLOYD
Pretty much every major pop/rock artist of the reel era had albums released on reel tape in the US or UK... except Pink Floyd.  Yet they had every reason to become a reel tape favorite.
As an example -- judging by the online auctions of the past 20 years -- there are more Beatles reel tapes out there than any other classic rock act.  That's because Capitol/EMI issued the tapes until 1970-71 on both sides of the pond, and clearly had a lot of experience with the format.  So there was ample opportunity to reel-ify Pink Floyd's first several albums, which were all released on EMI labels and were very successful in the UK.  After 1970, EMI abandoned reel tapes there.
In the US, Capitol had no reason to release Pink Floyd’s first several albums on reel, since they were wildly unsuccessful.  That changed with “Dark Side of the Moon,” but that LP came out in 1973 -- between Capitol’s contracts with Ampex and Columbia House.  Pink Floyd signed directly to Columbia in the US soon after, which meant later albums such as "Wish You Were Here," “Animals,” “The Wall,” and “The Final Cut” should all have been released on reel; they were not.
However, five Pink Floyd albums did have brushes with reel-ness...
Toshiba-EMI, the band's Japanese label, released 1970’s "Atom Heart Mother," 1971’s “Meddle” and 1972’s "Obscured By Clouds” in lavish packages at 7.5 IPS.  It is also rumored that their next album, 1973’s "Dark Side of the Moon," came out in Japan.  For comparison, there are confirmed releases of The Beatles' "1962-66" and "1967-70" on Japanese reel, which were released one month AFTER "Dark Side."
In the US, there have been two reported sightings of "Animals" on a Columbia House 3.75 reels.  The album was also listed on the format in the Columbia House catalogs of the time.  To date, no actual proof has appeared online... but you never know.
Numerous fake Pink Floyd reels abound.

MY STORY
Why did I decide to compile all of this information?
Growing up, I was completely fascinated by my Father’s audio system: a Garrard SL-95B turntable, Heathkit AR-1214 receiver, some AR bookshelf knock-offs (by a brand called “Creative,” based in New England) and an Akai 4000DS reel-to-reel.  I remember the vinyl neatly took up one shelf of the stereo rack, with the Beatles albums prominently gathered at the far left, followed by the rest, alphabetically.  As for the reel tapes, I can still remember the stack on the bookshelf: 3 TDK reels, 3 Maxell, 1 Scotch 111, 1 pre-recorded copy of Herb Alpert’s Ninth (sans box, which I clearly remember accidentally stepping on and breaking as a child), and pre-recorded tapes of Herb Alpert’s “What Now My Love” and The Beatles White Album “Volume 2” (both in their original boxes).  My Father had used the pre-recorded tapes as blank reels and recorded over them, often in mono (i.e. four programs per tape), since much of what he copied was Bollywood music of the 1950s through ‘70s.  I believe the pre-recorded tapes were from a middle-aged relative who belonged to a record club in the 1960s or early 70s.
The Akai reel-to-reel went into storage around 1984 due to underuse, and stayed there till I was old enough to discover it at age 10.  I can still remember the thrill of finding the Heathkit receiver in a box in the basement, pulling the Akai out of a closet, hooking everything up, and the slightly cracked takeup reel flying apart into pieces.  A quick trip to Radio Shack and we were back in business.
Soon after, that same relative who had given the Herb Alpert reels came through with an Ampex (i.e. high-speed) copy of “Sgt. Pepper”; and this time, it wasn’t recorded over!  The sound quality was leagues better than the beat-up LP I had and, to my neophyte ears, was as good as the CD.
About 7 years passed, and I was passing an estate sale one day on the way home from my summer job.  A quick trip inside revealed two interesting, cheap microphones as well as three reel tapes: The Beach Boys’ “Wild Honey” as well as a two-fer of “Shut Down, Vol. 2” and “Little Deuce Coupe,” plus a Beatles two-fer of “The Early Beatles” with “Beatles ‘65.”  I was getting hooked again.  Not long after, Cat Stevens’ “Teaser and the Firecat” showed up for 75 cents at the local thrift store.  And then, I discovered EBay, where I bought pretty much all of the Beatles and Rolling Stones reels.
Around the same time came a big score of used Scotch-brand reels.  I was taking a summer class in the music department at Cuyahoga Community College.  I had been to the building about a year before and seen a large rehearsal space with an enclosed control room/recording room perched above.  It was dark, but I remember sitting in there, watching my friend’s band rehearse, and noticing a big box of ancient, unopened spools of splicing tape.  There was also, inexplicably, a carton of sealed vinyl copies of Neil Young’s “Everybody’s Rockin’.”  Strange.  Anyhow, fast forward a year and I was leaving a classroom next door.  There was a large dumpster in the hallway, overflowing with boxed reels of Scotch-brand tape.  It was insane.  I immediately began rummaging through and realized what these were: in the 1960s and 1970s, the college library offered the reels for students to check out, instead of fragile, damage-prone LPs.  Library staff would copy their LPs to Scotch 111 tape, insert leader tape between selections (hence that big box of leftover splicing tape I saw) and spool it onto an empty Scotch RB-7 reel.  The box would be labeled with the contents and a catalog number.  Here’s an example of what one of those reels looked like:

As you can guess by now, I pulled my beat up 1987 Toyota Camry up to the exit doors and spent an hour loading in as many reels as I could, to the point that the car struggled to get above 55 mph on the way home.  I clearly remember sitting in the garage, carefully peeling off labels, trying to find reels that didn’t have leader tape stuck in the middle.  I had visions of using the reels to record bands in the small, 4-track studio in my parents’ basement.  But after about 50 reels, I gave up and put the tapes in the basement until I could get some Goo Gone and spend more time with the whole project.
That never happened, and when I sold all of my pre-recorded reels in 2008, I also sold off the cache of Scotch tapes, too.
But I kept the reel decks I obtained, and I still have about a dozen tapes that, even though I’ve copied them to digital, I hang on to the originals.  Just in case.  And maybe someday I’ll go crazy and give up on vinyl and start buying pre-recorded tapes again.
