How does 'Pure McCartney' compare to Paul's other compilations?

I finally got around to checking out the "Pure McCartney" compilation and its track list.  I'm glad to see that it mostly supersedes 1978’s “Wings Greatest” and 1987’s “All The Best” (both the US and UK versions).  Still, there’s a few things missing which are on 2001’s “Wingspan” that will give a better total picture of McCartney’s work.  The songs asterisked below are on “Wingspan,” and I’ve also included a few catalog items that I’m surprised were omitted.

First, here’s a list of ACTUAL CHARTING SINGLES that didn’t make the cut.  What the heck?!

Give Ireland Back to the Irish (1972: UK #16, US #21) –Paul has declined to include this on hits compilations given its possibly incendiary nature

Mary Had A Little Lamb (1972: UK #9, US #28) –come on, now

*C Moon (1972: UK #5, US #10) –a double-A-side with “Hi, Hi, Hi” (which IS on “Pure”)

*Helen Wheels (1973: UK #12, US #10) –added to the US version of “Band on the Run,” this is kind of a forgotten single (and is usually on various deluxe reissues of BOTR)

Letting Go (1975: UK #41, US #39)

Maybe I’m Amazed (live) (1977: UK #28, US #10)

Girlschool (1977) – b-side to “Mull of Kintyre,” this was promoted as a double-A-side in the US (reaching #33)

I’ve Had Enough (1978: UK #42, US #25)

London Town (1978: UK #60, US #39)

*Getting Closer (1979: UK #60, US #20) –a forgotten single from “Back to the Egg”

*Coming Up (Live at Glasgow) (1980: US #1) –the studio version (UK #2) is on “Pure”

*Take It Away (1982: UK #15, US #10)

The Girl Is Mine (1982: UK #8, US #2) –likely left off for copyright reasons (and since “Pure McCartney” made a point not to include songs written by others)

So Bad (1983: US #23) –Paul clearly likes this song, re-making it for “Broad Street”

Spies Like Us (1985: UK #13, US #7)

Once Upon a Long Ago (1987: UK #10) – the one song from the UK “All the Best!” not included on "Pure"

My Brave Face (1989: UK #18, US #25) –Paul was releasing a deluxe edition of “Flowers In the Dirt” around the same time as “Pure,” and likely didn’t want them to compete; it’s too bad since it’s one of his better albums, making “Pure” incomplete

This One (1989: UK #18, US #94) -- another "Flowers" single

Figure of Eight (1989: UK #42, US #92) -- another "Flowers" single

Put It There (1989: UK #32) -- another "Flowers" single

Birthday (live) (1990: UK #25)

All My Trials (live) (1990: UK #35)

Hope of Deliverance (1993: UK #18, US #83)

And here’s the remaining tunes from “Wingspan” that might have been a good addition to “Pure McCartney," plus some deep cuts I personally enjoy:

*Lovely Linda (1970) – a trifle; it’s exclusion is not a tragedy

*Man We Was Lonely (1970) –an enjoyable ditty; most people cite “Maybe I’m Amazed” and “Every Night” (and sometimes “Junk”) as the only decent tunes on Paul’s debut… George Harrison singled out this song.  It’s at least as good as “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry

Love Is Strange (1971) –the cancelled single from “Wild Life” is actually pretty enjoyable (especially if edited down to single-length)… but no covers allowed on “Pure”

*Tomorrow (1971) – another nice tune from “Wild Life”

*Bluebird (1973) – from “Band On the Run”

*Call Me Back Again (1975) – a decent but unspectacular (and overlong) track from “Venus & Mars”

Soily (live) (1977) – b-side to the live “Maybe I’m Amazed” single, also on “Wings Over America”

Name and Address (1978) – a lost gem from “London Town,” clearly written as an homage to Elvis

Backwards Traveler(1978) – another lost gem from “London Town”; this and the above track are actually better than most of the singles released from the LP

*Daytime Nighttime Suffering (1979) –probably Paul’s best forgotten deep cut; it's most puzzling why it was ignored for “Pure"

*Rockestra Theme (1979) – it won a Grammy, so… I guess?

What's That You're Doing (1982) – Paul’s other duet with Stevie Wonder, nominated for an R&B Grammy in 1983; far funkier than “Ebony & Ivory”

*Tug of War (1982)

The Man (1983) – Paul’s other duet with Michael Jackson, originally slated for a cancelled single b/w “Blackpool”

No Values (1984) – one of the three “new” songs in “Broad Street”

*No More Lonely Nights (playout version) -- funky; I like it

“Unplugged” LP (1991) – Paul’s semi-comeback LP was well-received (even if it was a limited edition) and sits in stark contrast to his only other decent live album, “Wings Over America”; too bad there’s no tunes from either one included on “Pure”
