As long as we're covering The Beatles' Apple Records, I figured we might as well look at the Rolling Stones Records discography. The Stones' career has gone on much longer, but their label was never really a going concern the way Apple was. After all, Badfinger, Mary Hopkin and the Radha Krishna Temple all had big hits, while James Taylor, Hot Chocolate, John Tavener and Billy Preston would all have much success later on. Doris Troy, Ravi Shankar, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Ronnie Spector had all been successful before (and after) their stints on Apple, and of course the four Beatles themselves released dozens of hit albums and singles on Apple. In the Stones' case, the label has been little more than a logo on their official releases.
Still, there have been LPs (and even a unique single) that were not specifically credited to The Rolling Stones. Check out the list below, with chart positions and other information.
-PRB-164: Interview with Mick Jagger by Tom Donahue (1971, promo)
-COC-49100: "Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka" (1971)... recorded and mixed by Jones in 1969, but not released until 1971
-COC-39100: "Jamming With Edward" (1972, #33)... a jam recorded in 1969 with Nicky Hopkins, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ry Cooder
-COC-59102: "Monkey Grip," Bill Wyman (1974, #99)... also released in a quadraphonic mix (QD-79100)
-COC-79103: "Stone Alone," Bill Wyman (1976, #166)... also released in quad
-COC-39109: "Bush Doctor," Peter Tosh (1978, #104)
-COC-39111: "Mystic Man," Peter Tosh (1979, #123)
-In 1978, Keith Richards released his first solo 45: covers of Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run" and Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come." This was numbered RSR-102 (UK) and RS-19311 (US).
Other projects...
-From 1974-1979 or so, former Mamas & Papas leader John Phillips sporadically recorded an album with party-pals Mick and Keith, plus Mick Taylor and Ron Wood. The sessions were finally released on the CD "Pay Pack and Follow" in 2001.
-In territories outside of the U.S., Rolling Stones Records also distributed the 1973 album "Brand" by Kracker. This was a project by Stones producer Jimmy Miller, originally released on ABC-Dunhill.
Rolling Stones Records seems to have been dropped from CD issues of new Stones releases around 2008, when the band signed with Universal Music Group after nearly two decades with Virgin.
